Our Anti-Malware recommendations can vary slightly from client to client and environment to environment but generally speaking we recommend the following potent combination of hardware and software:

1) A SPI/NAT firewall/router (wired and/or wireless)

2)  Windows Firewall with the latest updates and service packs

3) AVG Anti-Virus Professional

4) Microsoft Windows Defender

5) MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and/or SuperAntispyware

6) Setting your computer to do Automatic Windows Updates and to leave your computer on and on-line at least one night a week to let the computer do routine scans and disk repair on its own.

The Cost of Doing It Right

The main question and concern is doing security right and at the right price. The good news is that most of my clients already have SPI/NAT routers; if not, you will spend between $60-$120 for a router is that is appropriate for your network.

Windows Firewall and all updates specific to it are FREE with any validly-licensed Windows computer.

AVG Anti-Virus Professional is available through StuCoRe for savings off the retail price and a TWO-YEAR license for only $50.79. Further discounts are available for multiple computers.

Microsoft Windows Defender is a FREE download and is automatically included if you have Windows Vista.

MalwareBytes Anti-Malware is free for the non-resident program and $29.95 for the resident program. EXCELLENT product even as a free, non-resident scanner.

SUPERAntispyware is a free for the non-resident program and $39.95 for the resident program. It is also an excellent product for eliminating the "free radicals" of a computer system. 

The Bottom Line

Just do it - get the right stuff to keep your computer safe, act appropriately on the Internet, and be pro-active when the day comes you encounter a virus. Computers do NOT have immune systems; they will never just magically heal themselves.
