If you think you are infected, there are TWO things to do IMMEDIATELY. FIRST, Do NOT go back onto the Internet until following the below instructions. SECOND, do the following four steps (you can do steps two through four simultaneously if you want):
NOTE: Running the below scans in "safe mode" IS be more effective if you can get there. Tap (about once a second, on a rhythm) the "F8" key on your keyboard when starting your computer. When prompted, choose "safe mode with networking" with your arrow keys. If at ANY time you think things are just getting worse, just pull the plug on the PC and contact StuCoRe. Viruses that embedded are far more difficult to extract later.
1) Run a FULL AVG Scan (see point A below).
2) Run a FULL Windows Defender Scan (see point B below).
3) Run a FULL MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Scan (see point C below).
4) Restart your PC and repeat steps one and two until BOTH scanners show no infection.
A) To run a full AVG scan, go to Start → All Programs → AVG 8.5 → AVG User Interface.
Left-click the “Computer Scanner” button to the left-side of the AVG window. Left-click “Change scan settings” inside of the “Scan whole computer” button. Check every box. Left-click “Save scan settings”. Left-click “Start Scan”. Remove anything the scan finds.
B) To run a full Windows Defender scan, go to Start → All Programs → Windows Defender. Left-click the arrow TO THE RIGHT of the “Scan” button. Left-click “Full Scan”. Remove anything the scan finds.
C) To run a full MalwareBytes Anti-Malware scan, go to Start → All Programs → MalwareBytes → MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. Left-click the “Update” tab and left-click the “Update” button. Then, left-click the “Scan” tab, and then left-click the “Full Scan” radio button. Then left-click “Perform scan”. Remove anything the scan finds.
D) There is another program - SUPERAntispyware (www.superantispyware.com) that is also a good scanner to download and run.
After all scanners show no further infection, restart your PC one last time. Then, attempt to go back onto the Internet and see if things have returned to normal. If not, call StuCoRe.
FOLLOWING THIS SELF-HELP guide saves you TIME and MONEY (and spares your “AVG Free First Clean” if you haven't used it yet). Do your best to attempt these steps but if the virus remains, StuCoRe is there to help.
